Silicon Valley
The big move is finally complete. I am all settled in my new home in the heart of Silicon Valley. This comming week I will begin work and will hopefully make use of all the skills I have gained throughout my education. I am sure these new challenges will help propel me to the higher echelons of my career.

Kerberos@Home
Every day it seems as though I talk to more people who are adding a "media server" to their home networks. A simple Samba server, or plans to implement the up and coming Windows Home Server. This sorta made me think about a household situation and a rather complex issue that many non-technical individuals will need to manage. That issue is authentication/authorization. Imagine a situation where there is a rather large family: 2 adults, 4 children. All children of varying ages and therefore interests. Removing the parent/child censorship issue altogether there is still the problem of how individuals manage content specific to themselves. People will want to have storage locations specific for themselves, and have access to that location tightly controlled so that only they have access to that content. This can obviously be handled on the server itself, or through a separate service that handles authentication/authorization exclusively such as Kerberos. I think it would be beneficial to implement Kerberos authentication on a consumer level. Not only could Kerberos allow users to access their media, but users could also access other networkable resources: computers, videogame consoles, file stores, any Kerberos aware service. This would pave the way for one set of logon credentials for all resources within the home. Kerberos can be extremely complicated to setup for the average user, but if Apple or Microsoft could provide an implementation within a "home server" product it would bring this power to the consumer, and I think that in the long run this will provide a new realm of convenience (pun intended).

Wash with AJAX to keep things nice and clean
For quite some time I admired web 2.0 and all the amazing technologies from a user perspective. It is about time I do something about that. I have been thinking about AJAX for some time and I am finally about ready to implement some site changes that takes full advantage of all AJAX has to offer. I have been playing with it and already have lots of ideas of what I would like to do with it. For starters I plan to do a bit of rewriting of my main page, weblog, and forum system to avoid the annoying page refreshes that are needed to change content without the use of AJAX. Secondly I would like to re-code the functionality of the main page so a user can drag the interface controls around and arrange them as they see fit. For example, a user could drag the poll module and place it underneath the RSS feed module. Lastly I want to change the way image enlargement works. Currently if I have a thumbnail image, clicking it will open the full size image in a new window. I would like to make it so that the site will dim and the full size image will appear on top of the page. Clicking the image that appeared will close it and return the page to the normal view state. There are some other ideas as well but those two will do for starters.
